The objective of the workshop held June 17th and 18th, 2010 was to review the procedures required for MSY (New Orleans International Airport) Incident Command Post (ICP), TSA Screening Facility and the Cargo #4 ramp (a.k.a. the special events ramp or west ramp) to ensure all stakeholders are prepared for the 2010 hurricane season’s evacuation plan for MSY and to identify any areas requiring improvement.

Briefings included the command and control aspect of the ICP, TSA Screening Facility and Cargo #4 operations for monitoring incoming and outgoing parish buses and evacuation aircraft.

Additionally, the following critical elements were discussed:

.         H Hour Evacuation Timeline from H-120 through L+24

.         Operation of TSA Screening Facility to include passenger manifesting and security screening

.         Discuss ground movement from parish pickup points (PPP) to MSY as well as ground movement from the TSA screening facility to Cargo #4 ramp

.         Coordination with Department of Defense (DoD) airlift at pCom® MSY

.         Coordination with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region VI/Louisiana Incident Field Office (IFO) Movement Coordination Branch (MCB),  Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP), Louisiana EOC (Emergency Operation Center), Dept of Social Services (DSS), Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) charged with creation of a flight manifest.

LA DSS counted on it’s staff as well as it’s vendor partners to make the drill a success.  Tom Bock Project Manager from EWA ( Electronic Warfare and Associates) and their evacuation and registration software, Phoenix.  Barry Walker from Northrop Grumman provided IT support and Squire Tech Solutions team provided the satellite service and satcoms  hardware support.  DSS used one of the 8 pCom® satellite trailers as the primary communication platform for the Air Evacuation Drill at MSY.  The pCom® Satellite trailer provided Internet communications via wired and wireless points for 5 laptop PC’s inside the building to manifest 72 people in less than 4 ½ minutes.   The Stakeholders where pleased with the processing speed to create a manifest of evacuees enabling FEMA and DoD to meet the timeline for  getting the flights off the ground.

Why Squire Tech Solutions Joined The EDGE®

03/06/2010 Leave a comment

Squire Tech Solutions manufactures advanced satellite interoperable communication networks and mobility trailer systems for first responders, military and public safety applications.

Michael B. Zalle, Vice President, Squire Tech Solutions, LLC.

Each product that Squire Tech develops goes through a collaborative engineering process with feedback from at least one end user per target market, and its integrated component manufacturers.  This collaborative process begins with market demand, and is driven by Squire Tech’s core competency in engineering and development of satellite-enabled interoperability systems.

Squire Tech Solution’s model of collaboration and needs-based development aligns perfectly with that of the EDGE Innovation Network. We seek like-minded partnerships and technology forums to advance the design of our interoperable product lines.   We are excited to join the EDGE and partner with its members to advance product development by collaborative analysis, design, production, and marketing. In fact, just weeks after joining the EDGE, we had our first collaborative success.

The pCom™ 300 is one of Squire Tech’s flagship products. It is a modular communications and site power trailer system focused on tactical response.  pCom™ trailers are deployed for varying applications, including: radio tower on demand, satellite voice and data backhaul, long term autonomous field Operations Power System, and remote scene surveillance applications.
We began the collaborative process with fellow EDGE member DRS Laurel Technologies.  Using the EDGE process, we began engineering discussions focused on the development of military compliant modifications to our commercial fly-away and trailer-based responder systems.

Squire Tech and DRS Laurel Technologies will work together on projects focusing on the mobilization of field systems by leveraging in the pCom™ powered communications trailer system and DSR lines of hardened technologies.   The combination of the two organizations engineering strengths addresses the critical First Responder and War Fighter requirement for rapid deployment and ease of operation.

The EDGE Innovation Network provides Squire Tech access to field operations personnel that will use our equipment during a mission.  This allows us to collect feedback on our products directly from our customer base and from other EDGE members who work in conjunction with Squire Tech. This immediate feedback drives our design changes and product improvements, allowing us to better serve our customers, as well as end operators deployed in the field.

pCom Emergency Response Trailers Certified for JP-8 Fuel

03/01/2010 Leave a comment

Squire Tech Solutions pCom 300 and pCom 400 approved by Perkins for JP-8 Fuel.

About JP-8:   JP-8, or JP8 (for “Jet Propellant 8″) is a jet fuel, specified in 1990 by the U.S. government. It is kerosene-based. It is a replacement for the JP-4 fuel; the U.S. Air Force replaced JP-4 with JP-8 completely by the fall of 1996, to use a less flammable, less hazardous fuel for better safety and combat survivability. U.S. Navy uses a similar formula to JP-8, JP-5. JP-8 is projected to remain in use at least until 2025.

JP-8 fuel is used at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, for heating, electrical generation, and melting ice for water. It is used because it will not gel at low temperatures.

JP-8 is also used by Army Food Service Specialists (cooks) to fuel Modern Burner Units (MBUs) IAW Army Field Feeding Manual FM 10-23.

JP-8 is used for military diesel engines too. Because Cetane number is not specified this aviation fuel is causing troubles in modern highly supercharged engines during cold start and idling due to low compression temperatures and following ignition delay. Because lubricity is not specified, modern rail diesel engines can experience problems in high pressure fuel pumps and injectors.

January 20, 2010

Dallas, TX – Squire Tech Solutions LLC, announced today it has joined the EDGE® Innovation Network, a collaborative, open-environment initiative enabling industry and academia, with government input, to work together to field new technologies and innovative capabilities to warfighters and first responders much faster than the typical acquisition cycle.

”Squire Tech Solutions mobile response division designs and develops satellite leveraged communications systems for mobility applications,” said Michael Zalle, vice president of Squire Tech Solutions. “We are excited to be joining other industry leading technology companies who see their products benefiting the warfighter as well as in the domestic and international first responder community.”

Sponsored by General Dynamics C4 Systems, the EDGE has already delivered several innovations including a Soldier Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) Receiver or SIR to the U.S. Army. About the size of a Blackberry®, the SIR device delivers real-time streaming video directly from multiple manned or unmanned assets directly into the hands of soldiers on the ground. Currently, there are over 10 projects in development intended to improve and enhance warfighter capabilities.

Pete Palmer, EDGE Innovation Network director, said, “The EDGE bridges gaps between end-user needs and current capabilities by promoting rapidly prototyped solutions that could close those gaps quickly. By applying the EDGE process, the government can quickly and cost-effectively review multiple options for users to evaluate in months rather than years.”

There are currently five EDGE Innovation Centers worldwide and over 100 EDGE members. Recent new members include The University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Viecore Federal Systems Division, Eatontown, N.J.; Aspen Systems, Marlborough, Mass.; Florida State University, Tallahassee, Fla.; and the University of California at Santa Barbara. More information can be found online at www.EDGE-innovation.com.
